Some nice words from people we've worked with over the years.
BMB Weatherproof Canopies
Brian Blanchfield, Managing Director of Wirral-based BMB Weatherproof Canopies, was first introduced to Phil Bates more than 12 years ago.
At the time, BMB was going through a difficult spell and the company was looking for a new accountant to help steer it to safer waters. Brian appointed Phillip Bates & Co as BMB’s accountant and the relationship has grown ever since.
BMB became a client on its highly regarded Business Development programme and Phil has become an integral part of the business ever since.
When Phil started working with Brian, BMB employed 12 people and had a turnover of £900,000 – today, it employs 38 people and has a turnover in excess of £2million.
Brian, whose business is based in Wallasey, said: “Phil’s advice and guidance has been invaluable over the years and he is a key part of our business, including attending monthly board meetings.
“Running a successful business requires many different skills and I would be the first to admit that the accountancy side of things is not my strongest area. This is why the relationship with Phil has been so important – he is insistent on setting realistic yearly budgets and each month he is able to give us a good indication about our finances and the general state of the market.
“He is also invaluable in terms of helping us understand the financial pressures around stock control, overtime and other key factors in a business.”
Brian said that Phil had also played a crucial role in ensuring that he took advantage of good opportunities.
Brian added: “About seven years ago, we were keen to move out of rented commercial space and buy our own site in Wallasey. We did this and, with Phil’s advice, seized the opportunity to build other units on the site and let them out. There is now a total of eight different businesses trading on our site, creating business opportunities and jobs for many other people outside of BMB.”
Brian concluded: “Phil has become a good friend and I trust his advice implicitly. He is extremely approachable, but will also tell you it as it is.”
Birch Veterinary Centre
Birch Veterinary Centre has been a client of Phillip Bates & Co for more than 20 years, during which time the business has grown significantly.
The original practice dated back more than 100 years to 1904 and for many years it was a mixed practice combining farm work with companion animals. These days the centre focusses entirely on companion animals and during the course of a typical year will see more than 12,000 animals including cats, dogs and rabbits.
Phil Bates has acted as the business’s accountant during this time, while Alan Mellor, the MD of Phillip Bates & Co Financial Services, advises on a range of financial affairs.
Most recently, Phil worked closely with the team on the £160,000 redevelopment and refurbishment of the practice in Oxton, Wirral. Bruce Marsden, a Director of Birch Veterinary Centre, said: “Phil and Alan’s guidance over the years has been invaluable and has covered many areas including bank loans, practice improvements and pensions.
“The investment in the redevelopment of the centre has enabled us to create more consulting rooms in a part of the building that was not previously being used.
“Phil and his team have many strengths. They are prompt and efficient, they are proactive and are able to look at things differently.
“We have certainly found it beneficial to have our accountancy and financial planning under the same roof.”
